Waste not want not
Longhurst Group is one of the first housing organisations to
sign up to the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) which
aims to reduce the amount of construction and demolition waste
being sent to landfill.

Every year the construction industry produces 120 million tonnes
of waste of which 40% is generated by the public sector in the
UK.
Recognising the environmental and economic impacts of these
levels of wastage, the Government has established a target in
England that by 2012, there needs to be a 50% reduction in
construction, demolition and excavation waste to landfill compared
to 2008.
Longhurst Group has joined over 40 leading national
organisations, such as Simons Group, Kier Group, and major retailer
Asda in a voluntary agreement to help ensure this target is
achieved.
Ian Jackson, Director of Development commented ‘Longhurst Group
is absolutely committed to reducing construction waste.'
‘We already contribute significantly to these targets. For
example we work with a waste company who recycles 80% of the
construction waste on our development sites in Lincolnshire and
plans are underway to expand this initiative across the
Midlands.’
